From Gabe's Blog: what to do? what is to be done?

http://community.livejournal.com/dailygabespam/220521.html

i just read through this post and i’m really bummed. like you guys, i wish i had a perfect solution. but i honestly am at a loss.

on one hand i want to do right by the people who got us to where we are. and on the other hand i want our band to be welcoming and non-discriminating of new fans (after all, i remember being the really geeky and excited kid with a horrible wardrobe waiting behind roseland to catch a glimpse of my idols).

and to make things more complicated, we keep getting busier every day. which of course is a blessing; to have cobras take off in other parts of the world and have to travel there, and do interviews, and get a chance to introduce kids to our band across the globe - it’s a dream. but every day we have less and less free time. less time to devote to people on an individual basis.less time to answer emails. less time to communicate with you guys ( and also less time to devote to our families - this definitely takes a toll on our personal lives as well..)  and it sucks to go back to a town and not have the time to hang out with people you know because you have more shit on your plate. but at the same time i want as many people as possible to hear what we do. it’s a beautiful thing to work really hard for something and to get appreciated for it. but i also don’t want to disappoint the people who already have their ears to our wall; who have already been supporting us.

and i guess i’m kind of going in circles.. kind of like all the points being made on the post: they’re all valid, but i cant seem to find the solution.  and i certainly don’t have the answer. so please, if you have an idea, help me. and if you think we should just pull the plug , let me know. because i don’t give a shit about having a fan club if our fans are not happy.

if having a fan club is killing what was happening organically on LJ, then maybe it’s not worth it. if both can;t exist, i’d rather have the one that feels more real. the invisible hand of cobra fans.

sorry if this is a bit out there. i’m totally jet lagged and exhausted,…

xo

seasons: 10/01/2009 5:51 PM
its like you get what you signed up for and have to take what comes with it.... you can't make everyone happy but you do have to see things through their eyes and understand.... (i had to make another comment, i just read the live journal thing)

same yeah

ive loved you guys since forever

and i guess it really bugs me when slutty mainstream girls are singing good girls go bad :P

but as long as you guys can see the real fans, as opposed to the ones who only like you for leighton meester, i guess its all good.

just know that were all here for you, never forget that, okay?

we trust you to not get all wrapped up i your new come fame.

I dunno know why do we feel that way when bands become bigger.....but it doesnt mean we love them less.it just makes it different.I know u guys are gonna be able to handle this.mm..we have to figure out something.Hope something can be done.

i kind of agree with what she had to say. personally, i do get upset when bands that i have liked forever get big. i feel really selfish about it, which isn't good. but i feel like i have known about the band since the beginning and suddenly they are this huge mainstream success, which i mean congratulations to them, but i feel like once you are mainstream, it only ends up going down a bad path...
Aw, it is okay Gabe!!!
I think Cobra should do like one major world tour and then go under the radar and then BAM explode with a total kick-arse record.
Dooooooo iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!

i love the LJ community. Haven't joined the fan club yet even though i bought the deluxe edition & shit. It feels kinda weird Cobra being bigger...I've been meaning to check out the club though. Is it worth it? i mean it's free.

i've seen the same thing happen with so many small bands, one day you wake up and they're all over the place.. radio,tv..MTV..

i personally think that your music is freaking awsome and should be heard by everyone and anyone, just dont get so big that you forget about us and the fans who have supported you from the begining..

other than that just remember your fans will stick with you until the end, and that definatly includes me and my friends, keep up the awsome music guys, you rock

xoxo

Hey Gabe, I'm late to this party, but I wanted to throw my two cents in. The little 12 and 14 year old fangirls need a place to hang out, too, and I'd much rather they stayed away from lj - that's where I keep my porn, dude. And yeah, the fanclub is all corporated-out, but those little girls wouldn't know where else to go otherwise, so why not give them a safe place, too? 12 and 14 year olds may be annoying, but they'll grow into your most loyal fans in 5-10 years. Then they can hit lj and play with the big girls.

There is no reason why the fanclub message boards should kill lj comms. Lj has some terrific advantages that the fanclub doesn't, and there are plenty of 'too-cool-for-school' older fans that would never join a club under any circumstances. But keeping the fanclub around makes sense, too. And if it helps you guys make money, damn straight I'm in favor of that. Your music makes me happy. I hope my money makes you happy, too.

i dunno i agree with u gabe, its a really tough one, coz i mean me and my mates have been fans of u guys for years, we've been to tiny shows and we waited for ages in the cold for the chance to meet u guys as we cud always rely on u coz u treated ur fans probably the best out of most bands, we watched u grow from 'snakes on a plane' now to this huge amazing thing being nominated for vma's, and i gotta admit some of my friends were worried ud go the metro station way and just become huge sell-outs but to be honest i got more faith, if this fan club provides an area for the newbie fans who dont really know u to hang out then fine, after all they gotta go somewhere but if having them around means that the real vibe of cobra has to be 'dumbed down' then thats unfair, we like joking around about drinking, drugs and watever else in a light hearted way and if having younger kids becoming fans means that this is gonna have to stop well then there's gonna be a problem.

we love u guys and dont wanna lose the real cobra which we've grown to adore over the years

I'm not sure what to think.....i've been with you since While the City Sleeps. I guess its good that you guys are gettin the recognition you deserve, but dont change or sellout because you guys blew up....i think you guys are great and whatever you want to do , ill be behind you.

I have just discovered this whole LJ thing and I am so far impressed. I love you Cobra guys since there was only snakes on a plan and I have seen your every show here in Colorado. What i like about this lj sight is the maturity of the post from Gabe and the responses he gets back. Its not any of that tween stuff, which takes away the maturity of this journal. I tried to follow Cobra through
ySpace, and its teeny bopper hell over there. I'm glad you got the teen fan support, but those of us dedicated to you, the ones waiting in the rain, or whatever just to say hello and take a pic, we need a more mature site to share and learn with our favorite band. Those of fans who think you amazing in so many "adult" ways, like how you got to this point and where the band is heading for the future. We are differant than the 12 year olds that giggle while asking for an autograph. Which I'm glad you have that fan base as well, but we also want the adult Cobra conversations and the funny ass bullshitten that the kiddies shouldn't/wouln't understand. I hope I am making sense her in some way. Can we keep the two fan bases seperated in a fanclub? Reading Gabe's recent journals is the shit I like, but I'm gonna get pissed off when there's 500 some comments from 13 yr old girls that manage to only repeat themselves about how much they love you, blah, blah, blah. I want to read responses like the mature ones above. This lj here with Cobra can be an awsome place to actually know and interact with the band without figting through the baby teens love comments! Hope I haven't offended anyone, just saying I would love a fan club that isn't centered around the young tweens, thats just to much of a mess to wrangle around on. When forming a fanclub does it only have to be 1 exclusive club, or could you

technically have 2?
